Netsuke are small sculptures used to hang things on clothes. Yōkai are Japanese monsters and spirits.
In the late 1700s, a book called Hyakkiyagyō showed pictures of these yōkai. In 2001, a company called Kaiyōdō took these pictures and made them into small, colorful figures. These figures were sold with candy. This exhibit shows how these flat pictures were turned into 3D, colorful figures.
The Japan Foundation invites you to discover the strange and wonderful world of Yōkai through these small Netsuke figures.
